Professional Organizations


Numerous professional organizations offer training and seminars that are relevant to CGAs and will meet CPD requirements. Some offer individual courses or seminars, as well as the opportunity to complete another professional designation. Many CGAs pursue interesting careers that include specialty in accountign and other fields. For further information visit the following organizations:

Credit Institute of Canada - become an affiliate member of the Credit Institute of Canada.  More information and benefits here.

The Derivatives Institute has established a number of workshops and on-line courses.  More information about these courses or to register here.

Financial Management Institute (FMI), provides learning opportunities and shares best practices in the management of Public Sector resources. The Alberta chapter includes federal, provincial and municipal employees as well as some private sector members mainly in Edmonton and Calgary. Visit their website for more information.

Certified Financial Analyst (CFA), the global standard for measuring portfolio management and investment analysis competence and integrity, the CFA Program offers a challenging self-study program for busy investment professionals.

Certified Financial Planner (CFP) The Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC) develops, enforces and promotes the highest competency and ethical standards in financial planning as defined by CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM(CFPTM) professionals.  CGAs may be eligible to challenge the bi-annual examination to earn this designation. Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) Globally preferred by employers, the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential denotes proven expertise in fraud prevention, detection, and deterrence. Those completing the CFE credential experience professional growth and quickly position themselves as leaders in the global anti-fraud community.

Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) The Institute of Internal Auditors offers several certifications for those in the field. Visit their website to find out more.

Certified Public Accountant USA - Becker Professional Review,  a preferred rate is available for CGAs who wish to sit for the US CPA exam. The agreement applies to In-Class (Live) CPA Review Course, Online CPA Review Course and the CD-ROM Self-Study CPA Review Course. Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta - A significant range of CPD in areas such as information technology, corporate finance, wealth management, human resources management, public practice management, general management, accounting and assurance and taxation and in various locations within Alberta.  Visit their website for more information.
