CEO Bio

John S. Carpenter, FCGA

John Carpenter, BA, MBA, FICB, FCCA, ICD.D, FCGA is the Chief Executive Officer of the Certified General Accountants' Association of Alberta. 

The CGA Alberta is responsible for the education, regulation and promotion of CGAs in Alberta.

John assumed his current role with the Association in 1995 after a 20-year tenure with a major Canadian bank.  His banking experience ranged from small town retail bank branches to commercial banking in Canada's largest cities, and from small business start-ups to world scale mega-projects.  At CGA Alberta he has lead the organization through major changes in professional regulation and significant growth in students and CGA membership.

John earned a CGA designation in 1987.  He subsequently received a Fellowship designation from the Certified General Accountants' Association of Canada for service to the community and the profession.  He was named a Life Member of CGA Alberta in 2009.

John holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and an MBA from the University of Calgary.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers, a Fellow of the Chartered Certified Accountants (UK), and a Certified Director with the Institute of Corporate Directors. 

John is a Past Chairman and a founding board member of the Financial Planners Standards Council, the Canadian CFP licensing body.  He is also the founding Chairman of the Board of the Financial Planning Standards Board, the international CFP licensing body responsible for over 111,000 CFPs worldwide.

John is a member of the Audit Committee of the City of Calgary, and he teaches in the Bachelor Commerce Accounting program at the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business. He and his wife Helen have two children and reside in Calgary.
