Governance

 The CGA Alberta Board of Governors is comprised of thirteen members, nine CGAs elected by the membership, three public members appointed by the Government of Alberta and the Executive Director (Chief Executive Officer) of the Association who is an ex-officio (non-voting) member.
Fiscal 2012 Board of Governors

Anita Klassen, FCGA is the Controller for Catholic Charities, Catholic Social Services, a not for profit agency that endeavors to improve the quality of life for people living in central and northeast Alberta. She has been a member of the CGA Alberta Board of Governors since 2005, and served as Chair in 2010-2011. Since receiving her designation in 1998, Anita has been involved in her local Chapter, acting as Treasurer and later the Chapter Chair. Her experience includes being a member of the Senior Management Team of various NFP organizations including the CNIB, the Canadian Council for Donation and Transplantation and the Bredin Institute Learning Center. When not involved with CGA volunteer commitments, Anita volunteers on the Community Lottery Board, Community Health Council and acted as the Employee Campaign Co-Chair.

Greg Draper, CGA is Partner, Forensic Services, with Myers Norris and Penny LLP where he currently leads the Forensic Services practice. He is now Chair of CGA Alberta. Prior to working at MNP, Draper spent 10 years as an RCMP officer in Alberta, working in both front-line policing and federal financial crime investigative roles. He has volunteered in many capacities with the Association, most notably as an investigator and mediator for the Complaints Inquiry Committee. A member since 2005, his insight, pride in his designation and strong work ethic make a significant contribution to the Board and the Association as a whole.

Roger Sanson, CGA works for EnCana Corporation as Group Lead, Regulatory and Cross Border and is 1st Vice Chair of CGA Alberta. A CGA since 1995, Sanson has volunteered in numerous positions within the Association, including the CGA Alberta Communications Advisory Committee, various student support activities and an advertising campaign, in addition to teaching taxation and other courses. Roger is an avid supporter and advocate of the designation and with the benefit of government, industry and academic experience, he will continue to advance the CGA designation in any way he can. He is very much looking forward to participating in the development of strategic plans for the organization with particular emphasis on the growing student population.

Rebecca Braun, CGA is CGA Alberta's 2nd Vice Chair, and is the Vice-President of Finance, Hopewell Residential Communities, an Alberta-based residential land development company.  She has volunteered with CGA Alberta on the Complaints Inquiry Committee since 2006, and was elected to the Board of Governors in 2007.  In addition to her work for the Association, Ms. Braun is a very active community volunteer, contributing as a Member of the UDI Finance Community and as Director of the Master's Academy, as well as the Hopewell Charitable Donations Committee.  Organizations that have benefitted from her contributions have included Meals on Wheels, Inn from the Cold, and the Calgary Food Bank. A CGA since 1999, Ms. Braun is now gearing up to pursue her MBA and continues to be dynamic contributor to the CGA Alberta Board.

Kenneth Grimes, CGA is a Corporate Controller. He brings 13 years of internal and external audit experience to the table, with an additional decade of experience with the areas of accounting, financial analysis & forecasting, budgeting and operations. In addition to Kenneth's current role as Controller, his industry experience includes 14 years at large regulated utilities, four years at Capital City Savings, and six years in the public sector. He has contributed in many different areas within CGA as well, acting most recently as Exam Review Committee Chair, having sat on the CGA Ontario Board, and as an instructor in Management Accounting. Kenneth has also been active in his community, working for the United Way and youth sports organizations. Mr. Grimes has been a CGA member since 1987.

Robert White, CGA is an owner of a Public Practice firm who joined the CGA Alberta Board of Governors in September 2009. He has over 21 years of public practice experience and has also taught for the past 10 years at various post secondary institutions. In addition to his work with the Association, White has been an active volunteer with many organizations including acting as Treasurer with Citizen Advocacy, Director of Optimists Club of Calgary, and Secretary of Family History Center. He has also volunteered with Boy Scouts Group and Public Practitioner's Group.

Jim Samuel, CGA is Partner, International Corporate Tax at KPMG Canada. As a tax partner in a Big 4 accounting firm, he has had a unique opportunity to promote the CGA brand in an area where there are currently few CGAs. Jim has been on the CGA Board of Governors since March, 2010 and has been a Member of the Supplementary Exam Review Committee for TX2 in 2009. Since receiving his designation in 1996, it has been Jim's passion to raise the awareness of the CGA brand at all levels, from the perspective of students looking to find a career path all the way to the boardrooms of Canada's leading companies. When not involved with the Association's volunteer commitments, Jim gives back to his community as a coach for children's soccer at the Community Level.

Penny Fair, FCGA, owner of Penny M. Fair Professional Corporation, has been nominated to the CGA Board of Governors in 2010. Since earning her designation in 1988, Penny has been actively involved with CGA North West Territories. At CGA Alberta, she has contributed significantly as a Member of the Practice Review Policy Board and is a regular contributor to CGA Alberta in a leadership role. Penny mentors CGA students at her firm and represents CGA Alberta at various recruiting events as a very positive example of a designated professional. In addition to her volunteer commitments at CGA Alberta, Penny is also an avid volunteer and contributor to her community. She is a member of the Sherwood Park Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Sherwood and has acted as Treasurer on the Western Summer Games, Canadian Condominium Institute (Northern Alberta Chapter), and Strathcona Minor Hockey Association.

Public Members

William M. Bone is the President and Director at Exploron Corporation. He was appointed as a Public Member of the CGA Board of Governors on October 1, 2008. Bill is an active volunteer in the community and currently serves on many boards including the University of Calgary Law School Dean's Council, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and the Center for the Prevention of Suicide. Bill graduated from Queen's University with a law degree and was called to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Province of Alberta in 1976. He brings to the Board a wealth of valuable knowledge from his experience working in finance, petroleum, mining, and acting as President and Director for various companies of Loram Group.

Dr. Michael J. Robinson, CFA is an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary.  He was appointed as a Public Member of the CGA Board of Governors in 2008.

Rebecca Balcom is the Principal at Golder Associates Ltd  and was appointed as a Public Member of the CGA Board of Governors in 2006.
