How do I re-enroll?
- To the right, select My CGA Profile
- Log in using your CGA student ID # and your personal password
- From Student Self Services (in My CGA Profile), select Program Enrollment
- Select Submit your Annual Declaration
- Once the declaration has been completed, your annual dues will be automatically posted to the Checkout.
- Pay the dues online via credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Credit card transactions will only be accepted online and mailed, e-mailed, or faxed credit card numbers will not be accepted. If paying by cheque, please print out the Checkout screen, attach your payment, and mail it to the CGA Alberta office
What is non-active status?
Non-active status is a year away from the CGA Program and is granted because of extenuating circumstances that prevent or defer you from taking any studies. There are only two non-active years available to a student during their entire CGA Program.
Students can request non-active status via My CGA Profile > Program Enrollment > Request non-active status. Students will submit their request to the CGA Association, CGA receives and review the request. Once the request is approved the non-active fee will placed in to the student's checkout and the student will receive an e-mail their request has been approved and can proceed to the checkout to complete the non-active status registration.
What does a non-active year do for the student?
- A non-active allows student to step away from the program of study for one academic year (September to August), while maintaining the student's place in the CGA Program.
- Maintain access to the CGA website thereby allowing students to stay up-to-date by reading the monthly e-Advocate and important information available to our students and members.
- Register for student events via the CGA website
- Extends your program time limit by one year
- Maintain your current credits and program enrollment as per the year you registered with CGA
- A non-active year will not be counted against your allotted time in the CGA Program.
- Offers students a lower student tuition fee for the year (because students are not to be taking any courses toward their program)
What is not allowed during a non-active year?
Transfer credit for any courses taken during a non-active year either post-secondary or online. Students cannot take courses toward their CGA designation during this year.
Please Note: Non-active status will not be granted if you are currently taking transfer credit courses elsewhere or if your are already enrolled in the current academic year. You may request up to two non active years before you are advised to withdraw and re-enroll in the CGA Program.
At what stage in the program am I required to provide the Association with practical experience information?
Alberta CGA Students will be requested to report the practical experience they have achieved after completion of level 4 of the CGA program. A Practical Experience Assessment Questionnaire (PEAQ) is used for the reporting process. Students at Level 4 and below, may use the Online PEAQ to self-assess their standing, and may print a hard copy to review with an employer for planning purposes. However, the PEAQ should not be submitted for review until minimum competencies have been met.
Who evaluates my Practical Experience Assessment Questionnaire (PEAQ)?
PEAQ forms are or a practical experience review committee, comprised of CGAs who are selected for their expertise in various employment sectors. These employment sectors include Commerce/Industry, Government and Public Practice.
When I received my assessment, I realized that I omitted some relevant experience information. What should I do?
Request (by email to studentservices@cga-alberta.org) that your file be re-set. When this is complete, you may access and update your information in your PEAQ file. None of the original information you entered will be lost. You must re-submit to your employer for verification if your file has been re-set.
I am considering another job opportunity. How can I determine whether it satisfies the Association?s experience criteria? Can I obtain an opinion from the committee?
You should go online and complete the self-assessment component of the PEAQ which will give you an indication of whether you meet the requirements or not.
I have been notified that I must submit a PEAQ form. However, I have started a new job recently and am not yet established. How should I complete the PEAQ form?
You have two options: wait until you have been in your new position for a minimum of six months before submitting your PEAQ file, or, submit to your previous employer for verification.
I have previous experience obtained outside of Canada . Will this experience meet the Association?s criteria?
Experience obtained outside of Canada will be considered in the evaluation process. Special care will be needed, however, to validate such experience, especially for professional competencies. Association policy requires that a minimum of one year of experience must be Canadian.
When is my tax receipt available?
Tax receipts will be available online no later than February 28 of each year. You may access it via My CGA Profile and then follow the links for tax receipts.
I did not get any months on my tax receipt?
If you did not register and take any courses with CGA during the 2008 year, we are unable to give you any months on your T2202. Only on-line courses qualify with the exception of the Business cases as they are considered a full time course.
What qualifies for the education tax credit?
A student who is in regular attendance in a qualifying educational program is considered to be enrolled as a full-time student. Similarly, a student who is participating in post-graduate studies on a regular basis in a particular month is ordinarily considered to be enrolled as a full-time student if the student is registered for the regular academic year even though the requirements for attendance in class for such studies are minimal. Therefore, such a student who spends much of the time in a laboratory or library engaged in research or writing a thesis or who spends part of the academic year engaged in research elsewhere than at the university would normally be regarded as being a full-time student at the institution where the student is so registered.
What is a qualifying education program?
To be a "qualifying educational program" as defined in subsection 118.6(1), a program must run for at least three consecutive weeks and must require instruction or work in the program of at least ten hours a week throughout its duration and not simply for a minimum three-week period.
Are the membership fees included in the T2202? Or should I have two separate receipts? I am currently a student?
The Member tax receipt is for Membership dues for designated members. As a student these annual dues are classified as ?tuition? because students are not yet ?professionals?. You would have paid the Annual student fee which is included on your T2202 as per CRA.
I transferred from an affiliate to CGA AB. I had paid the 2008 fees to the affiliate, but felt that since I am now with CGA AB you would be providing the receipt. Is this true?
The receipt must be issued by the province to which you paid the fees. You should be receiving a receipt from your previous affiliate, but you may want to contact them to confirm that they have your correct address.
