Admission Requirements
All applicants must be a permanent resident of Alberta, and be of good character and reputation. For Canadians, legislation in Alberta requires that you must have your Grade 12 diploma, or that you are at least 21 years of age and have worked for 2 years. Notarized copies of the appropriate documents (passport, birth certificate) are required with your Application for Admission.
If you are not yet a Canadian citizen, we can evaluate your application as to eligibility for the program. Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC) requires all applicants to possess a minimum of a Study Visa Permit prior to applying to enroll in the CGA Program of Professional Studies.
If you currently hold a work visa that includes the following condition:
"Unless authorized must not attend any educational institution or take any academic professional or vocational training course"
Then you are not able to enroll in courses in the CGA Program of Professional Studies and official student status cannot be granted at this time. Should you be able to acquire a study visa, we would be pleased to have you continue in your program. If you would like us to issue a letter to Citizenship & Immigration to assist you in this regard, please request an eligibility letter once your transcript evaluation has been completed. Once you obtain a study visa and IF it expires before you finish the program, it is your responsibility to renew your study visa and provide proof of its renewal to the Association in order to continue in the program.
For all students, there is also a work experience requirement for the CGA designation. Students are expected to accumulate a minimum 3 years of full-time work in an accounting or finance related position prior to certification as a Certified General Accountant. It is therefore important for non-Canadians to obtain a valid Canadian work visa in order to complete the practical experience component of the Program.
A transcript evaluation is required by all students before you are accepted into the CGA Program. Applicants must submit official transcripts for any relevant secondary and post-secondary education.
