Students in Public Practice
You must apply for registration as a Professional Service Provider, if you are a Student enrolled in the CGA Program of Professional Studies and perform one or more of the following service(s)*, alone or through your own corporation or a partnership, to a third party:
- Compilation Engagements (subject to practice review within 6 months of registration)
- Specified Auditing Procedures (subject to practice review within 6 months of registration)
- Accounting Services, defined as summarization analysis, advice, counsel or interpretation
- Other Statutory Filings
- Forensic Accounting (financial investigation or financial litigation support services)
- Advice about or interpretation of taxation matters
- Corporate Tax Preparation with other services (for a fee) and Government prescribed forms (i.e. GIFI)
To register in public accounting:
- You must obtain Professional Liability Insurance in the amount of $1,000,000 per occurrence. Reduced rates are available through AON Reed Stenhouse Inc.
- You must follow the Rules of Practice Review
- We recommend you purchase a current copy of the CICA Handbook - Accounting and Assurance and CGA Public Practice Manual (order form)
To avoid any break in registration and service to your clients in public accounting upon receiving your designation, you will need to begin meeting the full registration requirements as a student.
Upon Becoming a Member
To continue in public practice once you become a CGA member, there are a number of changes that will take place with respect to your registration. As a new CGA Member, you will be required to re-register in public accounting, and may have to meet the following education, experience and/or requirements prior to approval:
- Adhere to R510 Name of Firm of the Code of Ethical Principles and Rules of Conduct
- Attend Orientation to Public Practice Part 1 - Managing Your Own Public Practice *
- Attend Orientation to Public Practice Part 2 - Review and Compilation Engagements *
- Attend Orientation to Public Practice Part 3 - Small Audit Engagements *
- Attend CICA Handbook Refresher Workshop *
- Pass Taxation 2 course within last 5 years
- Engage a Mentor (Practice Advisor)
- Pay initial Registration Fee and annual renewal fee
- Notify the Association of any changes to the information provided to the registrar on the initial registration (i.e. Dissolving or Deleting your firm)
- Maintain a Quality Control Manual (unedited version)
