CGA Insurance Programs

CGA Professional Liability Insurance Program

As a highly visible entity, the CGA Association wants to assure the public that its members have appropriate insurance for the work they do. Professional liability insurance is mandated for all public practitioners in Canada.

Through the CGA Professional Liability Insurance Program, CGAs are provided insurance and risk management services to protect both themselves and their clients. This program is underwritten by Encon Group Inc., which has dedicated claims support to assist with the settlement of professional liability insurance claims.

The usual indemnity limit for CGAs in public practice is:

  • $1,000,000 per occurrence (the most the policy will pay for any one claim),
  • $3,000,000 per aggregate for a 1-person firm (the most the policy will pay in any one policy year for all claims)
  • $4,000,000 per aggregate for a 2-person firm, or
  • $5,000,000 per aggregate for a 3 or more person firm.

IAP Personal Insurance Program

The CGA Association offers CGAs and students a quality, low-cost personal insurance program through Industrial Alliance Pacific Life Insurance Company (IAP Life).

Realizing that as assets and responsibilities increase, so does the need for additional insurance protection, the CGA Association has developed five excellent insurance plans with a focus on the needs of the members, spouses, employees/partners, and students in Canada.

Optional critical illness plan

A critical illness plan fills the gap between life and disability insurance by providing coverage for life-altering illnesses not provided for under:

  • disability insurance or LTD - covers ongoing monthly expenses
  • medical insurance - payment toward treatment
  • life insurance - paid to the beneficiary, not the insured
  • retirement income - projected to cover monthly living expenses

The combination of healthier lifestyles, greater self-awareness, and significant advances in medical science means that survival rates of Canadians who have suffered a life-threatening illness have improved, and will continue to improve, because of these changes.

Available to CGAs, employees/partners, spouses, and students in units of $25,000 to a maximum of 10 units or $250,000, payable in a tax-free lump sum payment. Sixteen medical conditions are covered.

Term life insurance

Term life insurance provides members with basic life insurance needs. Insurance is available in units of $28,050 to a maximum of 25 units ($701,250) for CGAs, students, employees, partners, and spouses, and $15,000 or $20,000 for each of your dependent children at one low premium rate.

Permanent life insurance

Premiums are guaranteed and remain level for 20 years at which time the policy becomes paid up, giving lifetime protection. In addition, the plan offers a guaranteed cash value after 20 years.

Income protection insurance

Income protection insurance provides members with an income should they become totally or partially disabled. Insurance is available in units of $100 to a maximum monthly benefit of the lesser of $5,000 or 66.66 per cent of gross monthly earnings (excluding any bonus, commissions, and overtime).

There is also a choice of waiting periods (zero to seven, 30, 90, 120, or 180 days).

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This insurance provides for the member's family in the case of the member's accidental death or dismemberment. Available in units of $28,050 to a maximum of $701,250 for CGAs, students, employees, partners, and spouses. Available as a Member Only or Member and Family Plan.
