Protecting the Public
CGA is not just a program of professional studies. We are a self-regulating professional body overseen by the province of Alberta. Through the authority of Regulated Accounting Profession Act (RAPA) we are accountable for protecting the interests of the public, the integrity of the profession, promoting and increasing the competence of our members and for regulating their conduct. Being a CGA is not just about completing a designation. It is representative of an individual who values excellence, leadership and integrity, and contributes on a public level with the expertise they possess.
Complaint Process
CGA Alberta acts on behalf of the public to ensure that complaints regarding our members and students are investigated both thoroughly and fairly in addition to preserving the rights of our members.
Our approach to the investigation and disciplinary process is based on the principles of natural justice. Members of the public should always confirm that their accounting professional is a Certified General Accountant. Please refer to Find a CGA Member or Find a Public Practice to ensure membership in CGA Alberta.
Protection of the public is one of the Association's mandates as a self-regulating professional body. Complaints are forwarded to the secretary of the Complaints Inquiry Committee (CIC) and if not resolved through intervention or mediation, are then forwarded to the CIC Chair. Ethics and Standards
CGA members are guided by the CGA Alberta Code of Ethical Principles and Rules of Conduct (referred to as the Rules of Professional Conduct in the Regulated Accounting Profession Act, or RAPA). The Code of Ethical Principles and Rules of Conduct (CEPROC) provides members the standards by which their professional judgments are measured and include rules of ethical behavior relating to specific situations.
The Independence Standard provides guidance for members in the application of the CEPROC rules addressing independence.
